Do server racks need cooling? ›

Having the right cooling systems in place is essential for maintaining server performance and avoiding the dangers of overheating. Server rack cabinets are not just for keeping equipment tidy. You can also use them with air conditioning units to create the perfect environment for the technology inside.

One option is a ceiling- or wall-mount air conditioning unit positioned such that chilled air blows directly into the equipment intakes. Another alternative is in-rack cooling, which cools individual racks and cabinets.

The baseline kW of heat output per rack varies widely, depending on type and density of equipment, and can be anywhere from 4 kW-12 kW or more per rack, with some experts estimating that the rise of high-density environments and designs for future equipment will result in an output of 30-50 kW per rack.

Rack-based cooling

Similar to row cooling, the reduction in the length of the airflow path reduces the CRAC fan power required, increasing efficiency. And rack-oriented cooling allows cooling capacity and redundancy to be targeted to the actual needs of specific racks of servers.

Front-to-back

The formula for calculating BTU/hr is: Heat Dissipation (Watts) x 3.4192 = BTU/Hr. So if a server has a heat dissipation (output) of 500 Watts the thermal or heat energy generated is 1709.6 BTU/hr.

Muffin tins and (cardboard) egg trays can both be turned upside down and used to hold fresh-from-the-oven cookie sheets or hot pies or cakes. Alternatively, you can place a group of canning rings, like the lid of a mason jar, on the counter, then place the hot confection on top.
