The cemetery was created in November 1944 under the leadership of Joseph Shomon of the 611th Graves Registration Company.

Each grave in this cemetery is adopted by a family. They bring flowers and visit the grave multiple times per year. This adoption is often passed down through their descendants, some tending to the graves since 1945.

Originally over 28,000 servicemen were buried in this cemetery. Many were repatriated and reburied in the US in the late 1940s. Commonwealth and German soldiers were also reinterred elsewhere.
